KODIAK ISLAND AND A LITTLE FISHING TOWN
We bundled up and took the tender into town as a small group. Judy sat with Barbara Benon, her new found friend (and some say her twin), and one of the entertainers, Fiona, who has "the voice of an angel". It's getting colder! Kodiak Island is much more attractive than Dutch Harbor and as we cruised into the harbor, we could see much more activity with hundreds of commecial fishing boats nestled together and more cars and trucks around town.
Once in town, the girls went shopping and Rex and Brian walked down Cannery Row to explore the waterfront. You never know what you are going to find around the corner! First we visited the local hardware store which is always were Rex wants to visit first. He says that by visiting the hardware store in a unknown town, you can find out so many things such as the tools they use, what the local industry consists of, and talking to the local people in the store. It's an interesting concept and it worked. Of course, here were are in the heart of the fishing industry so almost everything you saw in the store was fishing related. Outside, there were huge anchors propped up against the building.
We walked down a little further and to the harbor. Wow! Eagles everywhere and we saw one eagle with a fish in its talons getting attacked by another eagle. The fish dropped and was swooped up by another eagle which in turn got attacked.
The fish dropped again and was swooped up again by a third eagle. It all happened in a few seconds!
to take his turn at feeding the sea lions which was rather risky according to one of the fishermen! He said he has seen these lions jump up on the deck and haul a man right into the water. We didn't doubt it! Looking across the harbor of fishing boats, we saw a boat unloading fish and huge sea lions jumping up for the small fish being thrown over the side. What a sight!
Rex decided he wanted
After we saw one of the sealions come clear out of the water to get a fish, we definitely believed it! Wow!
This area is also subject to huge tsunamis! The Aleutian Chain is the origin of many many tsunamis and Brian knows after getting hit hard in the tsunami that devastated Hawaii on April 1, 1946. That tsunami orginated in the Aleutian's. Brian was living on Oahu in the small community of Mokuleia on the North Shore at the time.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARY JANE DE LAUDER! We had great fun today and enjoyed the evening at Mary Jane De Lauder's "big" birthday party in Prego Restaurant. (Seated: Sherry, Dick and Mary Jane "the birthday girl", and Rex. Standing: Judy, Brian, and Tim (Sherry's significant other). The crew in Prego did their usual fabulous job of putting on the best of the best birthday parties just like the one they did for Judy back in February.....FEBRUARY? Wow, how time flys!
OUR THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
