DELIGHTFUL. BARCELONA - A MOST BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE CITY, THANKS TO GAUDI
We have been to Barcelona several times in the past, but this time we were able to enjoy so much more, thanks to the weather. Speaking of the weather, this entire world cruise has been mostly bright sunshine and no rain. Quite remarkable! In shirtsleeve weather in April, we were able to stroll along Las Ramblas, the lively boulevard that wends its way through the heart of the city. We stopped for a coffee and watch the locals parade in front of us which, in a half hour, provided enough entertainment for a whole day. We must have been sitting in the high rent district at $15.00 for one coffee! Beware that people watching can be pricey!
All around the city, you can see the works of Antonio Gaudi, the famous architect who designed so many buildings in Barcelona including the Sagrada Familia and, although Gaudi died in 1926 after being hit by a trolly, the construction of this incredible building continues today. The Sagrada Familia reminded us of a sand castle on the beach with drops of wet sand building up on each steeple. We thought, like many others, that maybe the term, "Gaudy" came from Antonio Gaudi, but it didn't. If it did, it would make sense. The term "Gaudy" comes from the French back in the 17th Century, long before Barcelona's Gaudi was born.
We continued to walk around in the old section of Barcelona and finally returned to our Crystal Shuttle Stop for a ride back to the Crystal Serenity.
OUR THOUGHT FOR THE DAY.....
"Those who look for the laws of nature for support for their new works collaborate with the Creator". - Antonio Gaudi
